Looking Younger The Botox Way

By Marlene Ataine

Botox Cosmetic has for years retained the title as the most commonly performed "non-surgical" cosmetic procedure in the United States, based on its ease of use and consistently good cosmetic results. Botox Cosmetic is an injected liquid used to treat frown lines, squint and smile lines, nasal crunch lines, and horizontal forehead wrinkles. It is used to target the muscles underneath the skin. As a result, a more youthful appearance is achieved. Contrary to any myths floating out there, Botox does not travel anywhere else in the body. It is localized to the area of the injection. Normally, the effects of a single treatment will gradually diminish over a six month period.

It's not surprising that Botox is so popular. With an exceptional safety record over the past twenty years, and a price point that is very comfortable and relatively cheap compared with alternatives. Botox is produced in a lab by a bacterium called clostridium botulinum and it has been purified under very strict controlled conditions.

It's not just for woman any longer. There is the need and desire among men to look younger. As a result, they are turning to Botox in record numbers. Looking younger or the desire to look younger is no longer just the domain of women. The market for men is booming. The numbers are quite impressive. Some industry reports have estimated that the numbers have tripled in the past six years. That puts the actual numbers about a half a million men. A segment of about ten percent of all Botox injections.

The reasons for men flocking to this product are varied but can generally be broken down into several underlying categories. Frankly, many men are being introduced to it by their wives. Their wives may have had the procedure themselves, seen the exceptional results and the youthful appearance. And then, naturally, they want the same thing for their husband. Men no longer think of erasing wrinkles as a the domain of women.

Are there any people who should not receive Botox?

Botox should not be given to pregnant women, nursing mothers, or patients with neuromuscular diseases like myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, AML (Lou Gehrig's), or motor neuropathy should not use Botox. Patients who are allergic to human albumin should not use Botox. It has not been tested during pregnancy or nursing and that is the reason for the recommendation to avoid Botox in these situations.

You will not be administered an anesthetic for this procedure, but before your treatment, your specialist may numb the injection site slightly. The Botox procedure is very quick, usually around ten minutes in total, and it is virtually painless. In other words, there should be no down time required at all.

It's not surprising that the affordability of Botox is one of the factors that has driven it's popularity. A typical Botox session will usually cost between $300 and $400 per syringe. Every four to six months, patients will have to return to have another procedure in order to maintain their results.
